A love map as a guest book alternative

In short

A map of your own story printed at 50 × 75 cm or larger with a wide mount makes a guest book people actually read before they sign. The one thing that decides whether it works is paper: matte, uncoated stock takes a pen, and glossy photo paper does not.

Why it works better than a book

A guest book gets signed by people who have nothing to say and read by nobody. A signing print gets read first. Guests look at the map, find the pub where you met, and then write something, which is why the messages tend to be better.

It also ends up on a wall instead of in a drawer.

Get the paper right or it will not work

This is the part people get wrong, and it is unfixable on the day.

Ask for matte or uncoated art paper, 200 gsm or heavier. Pens grip it, ink dries, and it does not smudge when the next person leans on it.

Do not use glossy or lustre photo paper. Ballpoint slides, gel pen beads and sits wet, and the first sleeve that brushes it smears three signatures. If your print shop offers “photo paper” as the default, say no.

Test it. Print one A4 proof on the same stock, sign it with the pens you plan to put out, and leave it ten minutes. This takes twenty minutes and prevents the only real failure mode.

Size and layout

SizeSignatures it comfortably takes
40 × 60 cm20–30, in the margin
50 × 75 cm40–60
60 × 90 cm80–120

Two ways to make room:

A wide mount. Frame the map with a 6–8 cm mount board around it and have people sign the mount. The artwork stays clean, and the mount can be replaced if it goes wrong.

Print with a border. Ask the printer to leave a 5 cm white margin around the artwork. Cheaper than a mount and it looks intentional.

Because the map is a 2:3 ratio, an A-series print leaves thin white borders down the sides anyway, which at this size is a feature rather than a flaw.

Pens

Fine-liner or gel in black, and buy more than you think. Put out four to six; two will disappear. Avoid metallics on white paper, they photograph badly and half of them skip.

On the day

  • Put it at the entrance, not at the bar. People sign on the way in, when they are sober and unhurried.
  • Stand it on an easel at eye level. Flat on a table means one person signs at a time.
  • Put a small card next to it saying what it is. Guests hesitate to write on artwork unless invited.
  • Nominate someone to move it inside if it is outdoors. Dew ruins paper.

Afterwards

Frame it with glass, not acrylic, acrylic scratches and the signatures are the fragile part. If the mount got messy, replace only the mount.

If you also want a clean copy with no signatures on it, print two from the same file. You own a print-ready file, so the second print costs only the printing. More ways to use the file.

Timing

The map itself is drafted within 3 days and finished in 4–5, so this is not the part of wedding planning that needs three months. What does need time is the printing and framing, allow a week for a print shop and a framer, and two if you are having a custom mount cut.

Questions

Where should I print it?

Any print shop or online lab. Staples and FedEx Office handle poster printing in the US; Pixartprinting, Printful, CEWE, Saal Digital and Bay Photo are good online options. For the best result ask for Premium Matte or a fine-art giclée paper, and keep the file in the sRGB colour profile when you upload.

Can I print it at home?

Yes, on A4 or A3 art paper. Because A-series is a 1:√2 ratio and the map is 2:3, you will get thin white borders down the left and right, either trim them or leave them as a natural margin inside the frame.

I cannot download the file on my phone. What do I do?

Etsy digital downloads are easiest on a desktop or laptop browser. On a phone, open the Etsy app, go to Purchases, then Download, and if the PDF will not save, use a computer or ask us to email the files directly.

What frame suits it best?

A thin black frame for a minimalist room, oak for Scandinavian, walnut or gold for boho and earthy interiors, and black with a mount for dark, moody rooms. Because the map is black and white it sits comfortably with almost any wall colour.
