Comparison
Digital download vs printed poster
In short
A digital download arrives in hours, costs less, has no shipping, and can be printed at any size as often as you like, but you have to arrange the printing. A printed poster arrives ready to frame and is the better choice when the gift has to be handed over in a box, or when the recipient will not deal with a print shop.
What each one actually is
A digital download is a file, normally a 300 DPI PDF. You receive it by email or through the shop, and you take it to a printer.
A printed poster is a physical object made and posted by the seller. You receive a tube or a flat pack.
For custom work the difference is bigger than it sounds, because the file arrives as soon as the artwork is finished and the poster arrives as soon as the postal system allows.

The case for the file
Nothing can be late. No courier, no customs, no depot. For an anniversary, which is a date that cannot move, this is the whole argument.
You are paying for the artwork, not the logistics. On a custom piece, shipping and printing can be a third of the price. Removing them puts the money into the part that makes it specific.
One file, many prints. Because you own a print-ready file, one map can be a 50 × 75 cm print for the wall, a small copy as a bookmark, and a phone wallpaper. Buyers have printed a large copy for framing and small copies as favours from the same file. More ways to use it.
You choose the paper. A local framer’s matte cotton stock will beat most mass-produced posters, and you can decide after seeing the room.
The case for the printed poster
Genuinely better in three situations.
The gift has to be a wrapped object. If it is being handed over at a party, “here is a link” does not work. A printed poster in a frame does.
The recipient will not deal with a print shop. Be honest about this. If they are not going to upload a PDF and choose paper stock, an unprinted file is a chore disguised as a present.
You want it framed and ready. Some sellers ship framed. That is a real service and worth paying for.
The middle path most people miss
Buy the file, then have it printed and framed locally, and give the framed print. You get the speed and flexibility of a download and the recipient gets an object.
A 30 × 45 cm matte print is a few pounds or dollars at any print shop, and a frame that size is cheap everywhere. Total cost is usually below a posted printed poster, and you never depend on delivery.
If you go digital
Two things worth knowing: keep the file in the sRGB colour profile when you upload, and download it on a desktop rather than a phone, mobile browsers handle large PDFs badly. The print guide covers sizes, paper and where to print.
