Why is the first anniversary paper?
In short
Paper marks the first anniversary because of what it is like: easily torn, worth little on its own, and capable of outlasting everything else in the house if it is looked after. The anniversary sequence climbs in durability from there, cotton, leather, wood, silver, gold, diamond, so the fragile material deliberately sits at the beginning.
The symbolism
Paper is the least durable material on the anniversary list, and it is placed at the year when a marriage is least tested. That is the whole idea. A single sheet tears if you look at it wrong; a bundle of letters kept in a drawer can outlive the person who wrote them.
The tradition is making a claim about care rather than strength: paper does not survive because it is tough, it survives because somebody kept it somewhere safe.
The pattern it starts
Read the list in order and the metaphor is unmistakable:
- Paper tears.
- Cotton frays, but washes and comes back.
- Leather wears in rather than out.
- Wood holds a shape.
- Tin bends without breaking.
- Silver needs polishing to stay bright.
- Gold does not tarnish at all.
- Diamond cannot be scratched by anything except itself.
Each material is a slightly better metaphor for a marriage that has lasted a little longer. It is not subtle, but it holds up, and it is presumably why the sequence survived when so many Victorian customs did not.
Was it ever official?
Not in any single authoritative sense. The early materials (paper, cotton, leather, wood) are the oldest and the most consistent across sources. The middle years were added later and vary considerably between countries, and the “modern” list, which gives year one a clock, was compiled in twentieth-century America, partly by retail interests.
So the answer to “why paper” is really: because the earliest and most stable part of the tradition says so, and because the symbolism is good enough that nobody has bothered to change it.
The practical reason it stuck
Symbolism aside, paper is the most flexible material on the list. Almost any meaningful gift can be printed, written, illustrated or bound, a letter, a set of vows, a map, a book, tickets, a certificate. Compare that with year eight, which is bronze and pottery, and you can see why the first year is the one people manage to observe.
It also means the tradition scales with effort rather than money. A handwritten letter costs nothing and is frequently the gift that gets kept.

If you take the symbolism seriously, the brief is not “find an object made of paper”. It is: find the thing you would still want to have in thirty years, and put it on paper.
