# A love map as a wedding gift

> A custom love map works as a wedding gift because it is about the couple rather than about their house, the one category of wedding present that cannot be duplicated by another guest. The catch is that you need their story, so either ask one of them directly or gather it from people who were there. It can also include the wedding itself, dated in advance.

Giving a couple an illustrated map of their own story as a wedding gift: how to gather the milestones without spoiling the surprise, and how to use it on the day.

## Why it works as a wedding gift

Almost every wedding present is for the couple's *house*. Plates, glasses, linen, a voucher. Useful, duplicated, and forgotten within a year of the thank-you cards.

A map of their own story is the other thing entirely: it is about them, no other guest will have bought it, and it goes on a wall rather than into a cupboard. One buyer has ordered one twice for two different couples and reported that the bride and groom were "really excited both times".

## The one genuine obstacle

You need their milestones, five to eight of them, with real place names and dates. That is easy if you are giving it to one half of the couple, and awkward if it is a surprise for both.

Three ways round it:

1. **Ask one of them, and make them a co-conspirator.** The most reliable route. Frame it as "I want to get you something specific, help me get the details right".
2. **Ask the parents or the best man and chief bridesmaid.** Between them they will know where the couple met, the proposal, and the flat. Dates are the part they will get wrong, so ask twice.
3. **Ask for the essentials only and keep it sparse.** Where they met, the proposal, the wedding. Three strong stops beat eight vague ones.

## Include the wedding itself

The map does not have to stop before the day. Maps have been made with the wedding dated in advance, venue drawn, date printed, and one with a baby due the following year already on it. Every map ends with a "to be continued" arrow, so a future date reads as intended rather than premature.

This is what makes it work as a gift given *at* a wedding: the last stop on the road is the room everyone is standing in.

## Using it on the day

Because you receive a print-ready file rather than a single poster, couples have used it in a few ways beyond framing it:

- **A welcome sign at the entrance,** printed large, for guests to read while they wait. One couple said it would be "so cool to have at our wedding for guests to look at".
- **A guest-book alternative,** with a wide mount around the print for people to sign.
- **Bookmarks or favours,** printed small, one buyer printed a large copy for the wall and small copies as bookmarks from the same file.
- **The order of service or table plan,** using the map as the cover artwork.

If you want any of these, print at 50 × 75 cm or larger for the welcome sign and check [the print guide](/print-guide/) for paper, a matte finish is much easier to sign than a glossy one.

## Timing

A draft comes back within 3 days and most orders finish in 4–5, with nothing to post afterwards, so this is a gift you can still organise in the week before a wedding.

What you should not leave late is **gathering the story**. Chasing dates out of a wedding party in the week of a wedding is the hard part, not the illustration.

## What it costs against the alternatives

A map sits around the price of a decent set of glasses or a mid-range voucher. The difference is that in ten years the glasses will be chipped and the voucher forgotten, and the map will still be the only gift that recorded where they met.

If the couple has been together a long time already, [milestone ideas](/love-map-milestone-ideas/) helps with narrowing a long history down to eight stops, which is the useful discipline, not a limitation.
