# A gift for your partner on the wedding day

> The wedding-morning gift works best as something to read alone before the day starts, which makes paper the natural format. A map of how you got here can include the wedding itself, dated in advance, so the last stop on the road is the day they are about to have.

## What this gift is for

It is the only quiet moment of the day. Whatever you send arrives while they are getting ready, in a room full of other people, and it will probably be read twice, once quickly and once properly.

That rules out anything that needs assembling, unwrapping carefully, or explaining. It strongly favours something written or printed.

## Why a map suits the morning

Two reasons.

**It is a summary of the argument.** The road ends at the venue they are about to walk into. Seeing every stop that led there, laid out on one page, does the emotional work of a speech without you having to be in the room.

**It can include the day itself.** Maps have been made with the wedding dated in advance, the venue drawn, the date printed, before it happened. Every map ends with a "to be continued" arrow, so a future stop reads as intended rather than presumptuous.

One delivered map carries a handwritten anniversary note lettered into the artwork itself. The same thing works for a wedding morning: [a note on the map](/add-a-love-note/) costs nothing extra, and it means the words and the picture arrive together.

## Practical logistics

**Order early, hand it over late.** The map takes 4–5 days, but you do not want it landing in your inbox the night before the wedding while you are dealing with everything else. Get the file weeks in advance, print it, frame it, and give it to someone you trust.

**Frame it small.** 20 × 30 cm or 30 × 45 cm. Something they can hold and prop up, not a poster that needs a wall.

**Give it to the best man or chief bridesmaid**, not to a hotel. Hotels lose things on the busiest day of your life.

**Write the card by hand.** Whatever the gift is, the handwriting is the part that gets kept.

## What else works on the morning

- **A letter.** The most reliable version of this gift, and free.
- **Your vows, printed**, theirs, not yours, if you can get hold of them.
- **A photograph from before you were together**, framed, with a note about what you were doing that week.
- **Something for the day itself**: cufflinks, a bracelet, perfume. These are lovely and they are not the quiet-moment gift; they are the practical one. Both is fine.

## What to avoid

- **Anything that needs a plug, a screen or a signal.** Getting-ready rooms have none of these working reliably.
- **Anything that will make them cry for forty minutes.** Consider the makeup schedule. This is a real consideration and everyone forgets it.
- **A joke gift.** Save it for the evening.

## If you are both giving one

Agree that you are doing it, and roughly the scale. Neither of you wants to open a framed piece of art and hand over a card. [First anniversary etiquette](/first-anniversary-gift-etiquette/) covers the same conversation for the year afterwards, and it works the same way here.
