Gift guide
Paper anniversary gifts for your wife
In short
For a first anniversary the traditional gift is paper, which means the strongest options are things that carry your specific story rather than a generic sentiment, a letter, your vows in print, or an illustrated map of the places your relationship happened. The rule that separates a good one from a forgettable one is specificity, not price.
The rule that decides everything
A paper gift is only as good as how specific it is. A print that says Love could be for anyone. A print that says The Alma Pub, Crystal Palace, January 2023 could only be for one person, and that is the entire difference.
This matters more for the first anniversary than for any later one, because you have exactly one year of shared material and it is all still vivid. Use it while the small details are still easy to remember.
Fourteen ideas, most personal first
1. An illustrated map of your relationship
Your first year drawn as a single road: where you met, the first date, the proposal, the flat, the dog. It is literally paper, entirely specific, and it hangs on a wall for decades, which is why it is the most requested first-anniversary piece in the shop.
2. A letter, written properly and framed
Costs nothing. Frequently the gift that gets kept longest. Write about the year, not about love in general, the flat, the arguments about the dishwasher, the day something went wrong and she handled it.
3. Your vows, set in type
Especially good if neither of you has read them since the day. A typesetter is not required; a clean serif, generous margins and thick paper is enough.
4. A list of a hundred specific things
Numbered, printed, bound if you want. Not compliments, observations. The way she says a particular word. What she does when she is concentrating.
5. An annotated map of the town you live in
Mark the flat, the pub, the corner shop, the walk you always do. Works especially well if you are about to move.
6. A photo book with a written page per month
The safe classic, and the writing is what saves it from being a slideshow.
7. A first edition of a book that means something
An object with age on it. Look for the edition she read, not the most valuable one.
8. A custom crossword or puzzle about the two of you
High effort, low cost, extremely high payoff if she likes puzzles. There are free tools that will lay out the grid.
9. A newspaper from your wedding date
Cheap, easy to source, and instantly datable.
10. Tickets to something
Paper in the plainest sense, and it becomes a second gift on the day you go.
11. An illustrated recipe card of your first meal together
Frame it in the kitchen. Small, funny, and it earns its place on a wall.
12. A paper-flower bouquet
Carnations are the traditional first-anniversary flower, and paper ones do not wilt. Best as an addition rather than the whole gift.
13. A calendar built from your own photographs
The modern first-anniversary gift is a clock, so a calendar quietly satisfies both traditions.
14. A subscription to a magazine she would never buy herself
A year of small arrivals instead of one parcel.
What to avoid
- Anything with a quote on it that you did not write. A print of somebody else’s words about love is a gift about the print, not about her.
- “Paper” jewellery. Origami earrings are a technicality, not a gift.
- A star map of your wedding night. They are lovely, and they are also identical for everyone married on that date, which is the opposite of the point. If you are weighing this up, the comparison is here.
- Blank journals. A journal with your first page already written is a gift. An empty one is a task.
If you only have a couple of days
Write something, or choose a digital piece you can print locally, those are the only two categories that ignore shipping. Last-minute options are here.
Choosing between writing it and having it made
Write it yourself if you are good with words and have an hour of quiet. Have it made if the thing you want to give is visual, the places, the flat, the dog, because that is genuinely hard to convey in a letter and easy to convey in a picture.
Doing both is not overkill. A framed map with a letter tucked into the back of the frame is a very good first anniversary.
Questions
Why is a love map a good paper anniversary gift?
The first wedding anniversary is traditionally marked with paper, and a printed map is literally paper, but it is paper with your own story on it rather than a card. That is why it is the shop’s most requested first-anniversary piece.
Does it only work for a first anniversary?
No. Maps have been made for 6th, 20th and 46th anniversaries, for engagements, elopements, weddings, Valentine’s Day, and as gifts from adult children to their parents and grandparents. Longer stories tend to make richer maps.
Can I include something that has not happened yet?
Yes, and many people do. Maps have included a wedding date still months away and a baby due the following year. Every map ends with a “to be continued” arrow, because the story is not finished.
Can we use it at our wedding?
Yes. Couples have printed it large as a welcome sign for guests to read, used it as a guest-book alternative, and printed small copies as bookmarks and favours. Because you own a print-ready file rather than a single poster, you can print it at more than one size.
Can I ask questions before I order?
Yes, and it is encouraged, especially if you are unsure whether your story will fit. Messages are usually answered within a few hours.
