Adding a personal note to your map
In short
A handwritten-style note can be lettered into the artwork, and short lines or inside jokes can hang along the road as small pinned cards. It costs nothing extra, you just send the wording. It is the part of the map people point at first, and the part almost nobody knows to ask for.
Two ways words go onto a map
A single note, lettered into an empty area. One map carries a short anniversary letter written into the beach at the bottom of the road:
Happy Anniversary! Every year with you is an adventure. Can’t wait for many more. I love you!
Four lines, in the artwork rather than on a card. It sits where the road runs out, so it reads as the end of the story rather than a caption.
Short lines pinned along the road. Another map has small note cards hanging at intervals, each carrying something the couple actually says to each other:
I love you · Hope you sleep well · Love your face · Can’t wait to marry you
None of those mean anything to anyone else, which is exactly why they work. On a map full of buildings and dates, four scraps of private language do more than another milestone would.
How long can it be?
For a single note: four to six short lines. Roughly the length of a text message you would be pleased to receive. Longer than that and the lettering has to shrink to fit, which loses the handwritten quality that makes it worth doing.
For pinned lines: three to six of them, a few words each. They are punctuation, not paragraphs.
You can have both. Neither costs extra.
What to write
The notes that land are specific and unembarrassed. A few patterns that work:
- The thing you always say. If you have a phrase, use the phrase. It will look strange to everyone else and correct to them.
- A promise rather than a compliment. “Can’t wait to marry you” carries a date in it. “You’re amazing” does not.
- Something small and domestic. “Hope you sleep well” is a better line than anything about eternity.
- The joke. If there is a running one, it belongs on the map more than a nice sentence does.
- What the year was actually like, in one sentence. Not the highlights, the texture.
What to avoid
- Song lyrics or quotations. The map is already about you; borrowed words dilute it, and they are the thing that makes a personalised gift look generic.
- Anything you would not say out loud. If it reads as performance it will look like performance on a wall for ten years.
- A list of the same milestones again. The stops already have labels. The note is for what the labels cannot hold.
Where it goes on the map
Wherever the road leaves space, usually the bottom corner, sometimes the middle of an empty stretch. If you have a preference, say so when you send your brief; if you do not, it goes where the composition has room, which is normally the better answer.
Pinned lines are spaced along the road between milestones, so they read in order as you follow it.
How to ask for it
Send the exact wording in your first Etsy message, along with your five to eight milestones. Write it as you want it lettered, including the line breaks, what you send is what gets drawn, so a note you have already read back to yourself once is worth more than one you improvise.

What is a custom love map?
A custom love map is a personalised illustration that charts a couple’s relationship as a map. A road winds through the places that mattered: where you met, your first date, the proposal, the wedding, the homes and the pets. Each one is labelled with its real place name and date. It is delivered as a print-ready file, so you choose the size and print it wherever you like.
What size is the file?
The file is a 300 DPI PDF in a 2:3 aspect ratio, so it scales cleanly to 20×30, 30×45, 40×60, 50×75 and 60×90 cm (8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30 and 24×36 in). A4–A1 also work, but A-series paper is a 1:√2 ratio, so a 2:3 poster prints with thin white borders on the left and right.
Do I get a printed poster in the post?
No. This is a digital product. You receive files, not a parcel, which is why there is no shipping cost, no customs delay, and nothing that can arrive late or damaged.
How many milestones can I include?
Between five and eight. That is the range the layout is built for, and it is what reads cleanly at poster size, eight labelled stops is already a dense poster. If you have more moments than that, the map is better for choosing the eight that changed something than for fitting everything in.
Can you include our actual pub, campus or wedding venue?
Yes, name it and describe anything distinctive about it, and it becomes its own illustration instead of a generic building. Past maps have included The Alma pub in Crystal Palace, Adriatico’s Pizza in Columbus, the Taylor Tower and Bradley Hall halls of residence at Ohio State, a family camper-van business, and the maternity hospital in Cape Town where a customer’s children were born.
Can you include our pets and children?
Yes, by name, and by breed. Dogs, cats, babies and even a grandchildren family tree have all been part of previous maps.
