# 50th anniversary gift ideas

> Fifty years is the golden anniversary, and the one anniversary almost everybody marks properly. It is usually organised by children and grandchildren, usually involves a party, and the gifts that matter are the ones that record rather than the ones that add another object to a full house.

The golden anniversary is the biggest of them all. What to give for fifty years, how family gifts and parties work, and how to record half a century honestly.

## The fiftieth at a glance

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Traditional | Gold |
| Modern | Gold |
| Flower | Yellow rose, violet |
| Colour | Gold |

Both lists agree on gold, and unusually the tradition is widely enough known that anything gold reads as deliberate rather than coincidental.

## The problem, stated plainly

After fifty years together, they own everything they need and have politely accepted a great deal they did not. Adding another object is difficult. Recording something is not.

This is why the entire fiftieth-anniversary gift market is albums, framed prints and engraved things. It is the one category that gets **more** valuable as the marriage gets longer, rather than less.

## The interview is the gift

Whatever you end up giving, start by asking. Not "tell me about your wedding", which produces the version they have told a hundred times, but specific questions about the parts nobody asks about.

- What was the building where you met called?
- Where did you live first, and what was wrong with it?
- What year did the money get tight, and what did you do?
- Which of us was the difficult one?
- What do you wish somebody had told you?

Record it on a phone. Even if the gift ends up being flowers, you will have the recording, and in twenty years it will be the most valuable thing anyone in the family owns.

## Ideas for fifty years

1. **An illustrated map of the half century**, five to eight stops, ending on the golden anniversary itself. Printed large, it becomes the thing the party gathers around: people find the first house, the hospital, the town they visited as children.
2. **A book of letters** from everyone still around who was at the wedding, plus the children and grandchildren. Start three months out.
3. **The recording, transcribed and bound.**
4. **A restored and reprinted wedding photograph**, at a proper size, professionally done.
5. **Something gold, engraved with two dates and nothing else.**
6. **A party they do not have to organise or pay for.** For many couples this is the actual gift.
7. **Yellow roses**, which is the flower and which nobody expects you to know.

## How a map holds fifty years

Five to eight stops for fifty years sounds impossible and is actually the point: it forces the story down to the turning points, which is a better record than a list of decades.

A delivered map covering forty-six years shows the shape it takes. Where they met in 1980. The wedding two years later. The births, with the hospitals named. Emigrating. And at the end, a tree with every grandchild's name on the trunk. Eight stops, and the grandchildren are the part people point at.

If there are grandchildren, put them in. In practice that is always the stop the family stands in front of.

## Practical notes

- **Print it at 60 × 90 cm.** The audience is reading with glasses on, and this is a party centrepiece rather than a hallway print. [Sizes and paper](/print-guide/).
- **Frame with glass, not acrylic.** If people are going to sign a margin around it, ask for matte uncoated paper. [The signing-print approach](/wedding-guest-book-alternative/) applies here too.
- **Get period place names right.** Use the name the hospital, street or pub had at the time.
- **Print more than one.** You own a print-ready file, so a copy for each sibling costs only the printing.
- **Order early.** The file takes 4 to 5 days at $49, but a large print plus a cut mount and a framer wants two weeks, and the interview wants longer than you think.

## Splitting it between siblings

Divide the interview: one of you asks your mother, one asks your father, then compare notes. The two accounts will differ, and the differences are usually worth putting on the map. Agree the five to eight stops between you before sending them, because the map is a timeline and the order is what the composition is built around.
