# 25th anniversary gift ideas

> Twenty-five years is the silver anniversary, and the first one that is traditionally marked publicly rather than privately. That changes the gift: it is often a joint present from family, and it frequently has to work in a room full of people rather than only across a kitchen table.

The silver anniversary is the first of the big ones. What to give, how group gifts work, and what to do if there is a party.

## The twenty-fifth at a glance

| Traditional | Silver |
| Modern | Silver |
| Flower | Iris |
| Colour | Silver |

Both lists agree, which makes this one of the easiest anniversaries to buy for. Silver, or something silver-coloured, is unambiguously correct.

## Why the silver one is different

Twenty-five is the first anniversary with a public dimension. People throw parties, adult children organise things, friends who were at the wedding come back. Whatever you give may well be opened in front of an audience or displayed on a table.

That rules some things in and some things out. It rules out anything private enough to be uncomfortable read aloud. It rules **in** anything the room can gather around and point at.

## Ideas for twenty-five years

1. **An illustrated map of the twenty-five years**, printed large. This is the gift the room gathers around: people find the house they visited, the pub, the year they were at the wedding. At 50 × 75 cm or 60 × 90 cm every label reads from a few steps back.
2. **Something silver, engraved with the date and nothing else.** Restraint ages better than a sentiment.
3. **A photograph from the wedding, properly printed and framed**, not a scan of a scan. Worth paying a professional to restore.
4. **A party, organised entirely without them knowing.** The organising is the gift.
5. **A silver-anniversary version of the wedding cake**, from the same bakery if it still exists.
6. **A book of letters** collected from everyone who was at the wedding. High effort, unmatched payoff, needs three months.

## The group gift

At twenty-five the practical question is usually who pays. A map at $49 for a print-ready file, plus printing and framing, is a gift several people can share without anyone having to be the one who spent the most.

It is also easy to split into two: two prints from the same file cost only the second print, so the couple keeps one and a sibling or a child keeps the other.

## If there is a party

Print it large, frame it with **glass rather than acrylic**, and put it where people arrive rather than where they eat. If you want people to write on it, ask the printer for **matte, uncoated paper** and leave a wide margin, because pens slide off coated stock. [The guest-book approach is covered here](/wedding-guest-book-alternative/), and it works the same for an anniversary.

Order in good time. Files come back in 4 to 5 days, but printing and framing at a large size wants a week on top, and two if a mount is being cut.

## Getting twenty-five years onto eight stops

Interview them first, separately. Then group: several holidays become one stop, a run of flats becomes one stop, every job becomes one career change. [The grouping method is here](/how-many-milestones-should-i-choose/).
